Color Dynamics: The Interaction of Color

  • 16-Color as Symbol
The color studies shown in this gallery were painted with twelve gouache colors: lemon yellow, golden yellow, ultramarine blue (deep), sky blue, alizarin crimson, scarlet, raw umber, permanent white, ivory black, burnt sienna, yellow ocher, and Payne's gray. The studies were scanned with an Epson Perfection 4870 Photo scanner with SilverFast software at 16 bits. They were visually checked in Photoshop CS2, and modifications to the hues were made in the matching color menu. The colorspace for the calibrated LCD monitor was Adobe RGB 1998. The colors in these studies may appear different on different monitors.

Color Image: Projects

  • Ute and the Z
There are three projects in the color series: mysterious mood, Ute and the Z, and the Quixote Winey in Napa designed by Friedensreich Hundertwasser.

Hundertwasser Spittelau Heating Plant

  • Spittelau Heating Plant
The Spittelau Heating Plant was redesigned by Friedensreich Hundertwasser. The redesign demonstrates Hundertwasser's philosophy of colors, shapes, trees, and window treatments. All these elements work together within the context of modern incinerator techology.

Learning to Create Digital Images Photo Album

  • Rows: Building Facade
In order to become more familiar with my digital camera, I enrolled in a community college digital photography class. Our assignment was to take several series of images which were to be organized in themes illustrating photographic techniques. ROWS I am showing rows, both real and fanciful, using Photohop filters and blending options.

Photojournalism Photo Album

  • Berkeley Veterans Day
Photojournalism intriques me. I am shy about taking pictures in public, so I thought that going to public events would help me overcome that. The 2005 Solano Stroll, "Don't Rain on my Parade," was my first public event. The second event was the Berkeley Veterans Day event.

Portraits Photo Album

  • Portraits
I really enjoy taking pictures of people and cats, but I think that my most successful images are not posed images.

Men's Basketball

  • Men's Basketball
The Contra Costa College basketball team members wear dark blue and light blue uniforms. The men play a very fast game. They have stronger jumping ability compared to the women, and they are stronger so they can more easily throw the ball with one hand.

Pictorial

  • I chose to include a selection of images under the title Pictorial because I thought of them as using photography as an art form similar to the definition that the Photographic Society of America uses for pictorial. The PSA definition says that images in this category have emphasis on "interest, visual impact, composition, and technical excedllence." I limited my pictorial images to flowers, and manipulated them extensively in Photoshop.

Portraits 2006

  • Taking portraits isn't easy for the beginning photographer. The people in this album were very patient with me as I ran through many different settings and poses.

Soccer Photo Album

  • Soccer
Stop-action shots were my goal for the soccer images. This was my first attempt with sports photography. I also didn't know very much about the game so I simply decided to follow the soccer ball.

Dahlias Photo Album

  • Glenbank Twinkle
I went to the Dahlia Garden near the San Francisco Conservatory of Flowers to take images of the different varieties of dahlias. I used my 100mm lens on a tripod. It was an overcast day so I didn't have any problem with shadows; I shot in RAW with the ISO set at 100. I thought about depth of field since I wanted to have the whole flower in focus, so I chose aperture priority for the shooting mode. I did discover that I had to move around a lot to select a specific blossom. I cropped these images only slightly and made basic adjustments in levels and sharpening.

Macrophotography

  • Wildflower
In order to become more familiar with my 100mm macro lens, I decided to photograph small things. The wet spring in California provided me with images of an inch work and a salamander. I had to work to get all of the image in focus and quickly learned the problems of an aperature setting of 2.8 vs. one of 32.

Thoroughbred Horse Racing

  • Winner's Circle
These pictures were taken at Golden Gate Fields in Albany, Ca, during the spring 2006 meet.

Weight Training: Exertion & Stop-Action Photos

  • Exertion
These weight training images were taken in RAW forat, and the white balance needed to be changed to tungsten to eliminate the yellow color cast. I changed the RGB color to a quadtone to hve the people and the equipment be the focus in the images. I have grouped the images to show the exertion in the faces of men as they trained and stop-action shots with the equipment.

Weight Training: Portraits & Relationships Photos

  • Portrait
These weight training images were taken in RAW format, and the white balance needed to be changed to tungsten to eliminate the yellow cast. I changed the RGB color to a quadtone to have the people and equipment be the focus of the images. I have grouped the images to show portraits of the men training and the relationships between the men and the trainer.

Women's Basketball

  • Women's Basketball
The Contra Costa College basketball team members wear white and light blue uniforms. The women's basketball games were slower in pace compared to the men's games. The women didn't jump as high as the men and used two-handed throws more frequently.

Horse Show Photo Album

  • Horse Show
I went to the Pebble Beach Equestrian Championships primarily to shoot stop-action shots of horses in competition and to take portraits of riders. I shot in JPG format so I could get a burst of 23 shots I did take a white balance reading in the morning, but I didn't do it in the afternoon. This meant I had to manipulate the late afternoon shots more in Photoshop. If I were to do it over, I would take all RAW images in order to have a bigger image for cropping and more white balance control. I learned that it is better to wait for the good image than to have a burst of not-so-good images.
